Ohio rental property owners can cash in on the opportunity to make their rental units more energy efficient by participating in AEP Ohio's Appliance Recycling program. AEP Ohio's program rewards customers by giving them a $25 incentive to turn in their old, energy hog refrigerators. Plus, AEP Ohio will pick up the old units and recycle them for free. The benefits of upgrading to new and vastly more efficient refrigerators adds value to units, and saves tenants - and owners - money on their electric bills.

Refrigerators and freezers manufactured before 1990 can use as much as 1,500 kilowatt hours (kWh) a year. Retiring an older, inefficient refrigerator can result in savings of up to $150 on energy costs annually per unit. Meanwhile, multi-family property owners can multiply the $25 incentive while adding market value to their units with new, energy-efficient refrigerators. AEP Ohio has contracted with JACO Environmental to recycle the older, energy-wasting refrigerators.

JACO safely recycles 95 percent of each unit including the foam insulation which gets incinerated to generate more power. JACO uses state of the art technology at a Columbus facility to safely process the refrigerators, extract toxins and maximize the recovery of recyclable materials. Prior to 1994, chlorofluorocarbons (CFCs) were used in the coolant oil and foam insulation. Known to destroy the ozone and contribute to global warming, CFCs outgas into the atmosphere when refrigerators are dumped in landfills or improperly discarded.

"Beyond the efficiency and cost savings, refrigerator recycling holds an exciting potential to combat global warming and preserve our limited energy resources. What thousands of old refrigerators in Ohio apartments really represent are thousands of tons of CFCs that can be rendered harmless instead of damaging the ozone layer," said Michael Dunham, director of Energy and Environmental Programs for refrigerator recycler JACO Environmental, which works with AEP Ohio.

Combined with other energy-saving strategies, such as double paned windows, recycling old refrigerators can make a powerful difference on many levels, including market appeal. Take a look at upgrading your property's refrigerators. Recycling programs make it easy for you to make a huge difference. It'll work for you and your renters.
